Before you buy
Research your selection thoroughly. A pet parrot can be an extremely expensive, (occasionally) invasive and
long-lived acquisition. Don't rush into a decision. If the store is local, leave
your checkbook home on that first visit, and avoid a store that seems to be
pressing for a quick sale. Believe it or not, some stores actually care more
about the quality of homes their babies go into. You can rest assured that these stores have done a thorough
and effective job in raising their babies, including crucial early
socialization. For the well
being of the birds, don't go to many stores or aviaries in one day. If possible,
bathe, and change clothes and shoes between each store visit. Politely observe
store etiquette, which may include asking you to wash or disinfect your hands
before you handle a particular baby. Don't provoke the birds by waving your
fingers in their faces.
Personal compatibility
One of the most important factors is determining the right bird for your lifestyle. Don’t just buy pretty feathers. Deal with a retailer that can evaluate your personal requirements, and that KNOWS the different species, and their individual behaviors.
